“Post Tenebras Lux” – After Darkness, Light!

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” - John 1:5

“Post Tenebras Lux” was taken from the Latin Vulgate section of Job, which says; Post tenebras spero lucem—“After darkness, I hope for light.” This was the motto of Switzerland’s city of Geneva. This saying, a motto of the Reformation in the 16th century, was used to illustrate God’s gracious revealing of the true Gospel after centuries of corruption. Rather than a gospel of works or a gospel only available through the offices of a church, the Reformation made plain once again a gospel of grace through faith.

A rallying cry of Protestant Reformers refers to the rediscovery of biblical truth in a time of spiritual darkness. Because the darkness of heresy and immorality constantly creeps in, the church must always be preaching and upholding the truth.

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone." - Isaiah 9:2
